Admission Through Motion in Kansas

Applicants may be admitted to practice law in Kansas without taking the bar exam if they have been admitted to the practice of law by examination by the highest court of another state, the District of Columbia, or United States territory for five of the seven years immediately preceding the date of the application. See Rule 719.

Electronic Communications

Applicants are required to maintain a current email address and mailing address on their personal Supreme Court of Kansas Attorney Admissions Account and to regularly read all mail from this office, whether sent electronically or by postal service. Applicants should use an email address that can be accessed after graduation from law school. Applicants must ensure that emails from the Kansas Attorney Admissions Office are not filtered as spam and should add noreply@admissions.kscourts.gov to their email address book.

Admission Through Motion Deadlines and Fees

There is no filing deadline for submitting an Admission Through Motion application. The fee for admission to the bar by motion under Rule 719 is $1,250.

Eligibility Requirements for Admission Through Motion

Applicants who have been admitted to the bar by examination by the highest court of another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States territory may be admitted to the Kansas bar if:

  • Applicant's license is active in at least one jurisdiction.
  • Applicant has never received professional discipline of suspension, disbarment or loss of license in any jurisdiction.
  • Applicant has the requisite character and fitness to practice law in Kansas.
  • Applicant has lawfully practiced law for five of the preceding seven years.
  • Applicant meets educational requirements under Rule 711.
  • Applicant meets all other eligibility requirements.

Required Documents for Admission Through Motion

An applicant applying for admission through motion must submit the following required documents:

  • Undergraduate and law school transcripts must be mailed or submitted electronically directly to the Kansas Attorney Admissions Office from the college or university. Request transcripts at the time of submission of your completed application. See Supreme Court Rule 711.
  • Applicants must obtain a certificate of good standing, a disciplinary authority certificate, and a continuing legal education certificate from each state where they are admitted. Certificates of good standing, disciplinary authority certificates, and continuing legal education certificates will not be accepted by the Board if they are more than 90 days old at the time the application is received by the Board.
    • Certificates of good standing are usually issued by the Clerk of the Supreme Court of that state.
    • Disciplinary authority certificates are issued by the appropriate disciplinary governing board for that state.
    • Continuing legal education certificates should be obtained from the entity responsible for monitoring compliance in that state. Continuing legal education certificates must include proof of compliance with both fee payments and required hours.
  • All applicants for the Kansas Bar are required to submit a completed fingerprint card and the required waivers as a part of the character and fitness investigation. Applications will not be accepted until the completed fingerprint packet is received.
    • Fingerprint cards must be printed on card stock. Digital Fingerprints are acceptable but must be printed when submitted.
